Symptoms

Those with COVID-19 can experience a wide variety of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe. Symptoms may appear anywhere from two to fourteen days after exposure to the virus.

Possible symptoms can include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty with breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Anyone, at any age, can have mild to severe symptoms. However, older adults and people with underlying medical conditions–such as heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes–are often at higher risk for getting very sick form COVID-19.

When to Get Tested

If you have any of the symptoms listed above, you should test immediately.

If you were exposed to COVID-19 and do not have any symptoms, wait at least five full days after your exposure before testing. If you test too early, you may get an inaccurate result.

If you are in certain high-risk settings on a consistent basis, you may need to test as part of a screening testing program.

Consider testing yourself before making contact with someone you know is at high risk for severe COVID-19, especially if you will be in contact with that person in an area with a medium or high COVID-19 Community Level.

When to Isolate

Regardless of your vaccination status, you should isolate from others when you have COVID-19.

You must also isolate if you are sick and suspect you have COVID-19 but do not yet have results.

Follow the latest CDC guidelines on testing and duration of isolation from others.

International Travel

If you’re planning to travel outside the United States, consult with your airline and your destination country’s official travel regulations for information related to COVID-19.
