Suzanne’s Story

It was through a mutual friend that I first met Toniann Richard, and I later had the opportunity to work for HCC. At that time, HCC had only two clinics, but even then, their commitment to serving vulnerable populations was clear. We brought Craig to see Dana Zinn at the Waverly clinic, and from the very beginning, he adored her. Suzanne recalls, “Craig loved Dana and she was fantastic with him.” His dental care was overseen by Dr. Peterson, also in Waverly, who provided the same level of thoughtful, patient-centered care. Dr. Dana, Dr. Howerton, and Dr. Peterson each went above and beyond—not just treating Craig, but truly caring about him as a person.
As Craig’s health declined and he became bedridden, the pandemic brought even more complications. Yet again, HCC stepped in—this time with a nurse who visited our home so we could continue telehealth appointments with Dana. Their flexibility and support during such a difficult time meant the world to us. It takes a truly special provider to care for individuals with disabilities, especially those who cannot always communicate their needs. HCC not only provided expert medical and dental care, but also connected us with local resources we wouldn’t have known about otherwise.
Craig Closterman (August 8, 1968 – June 4, 2021) was an incredible person—an athlete, a Special Olympian, and a beloved brother. He proudly brought home Missouri’s first gold medal from the International Special Olympics and is honored in both the Sports Hall of Fame in Springfield, MO, and the Special Olympics Hall of Fame in Jefferson City. I was deeply blessed to have him as my brother—and forever grateful to HCC Network for walking alongside our family.
