The Lindmarks’ Story

This was the children’s ninth placement in just two years. Each had endured significant trauma, and it showed. The younger boy hadn’t received any immunizations, and all four children showed signs of mental health challenges. The boys had been on medication—information we hadn’t received—so we’d unknowingly put them through withdrawal. The twins were extremely underweight, barely eating, and at just 15 pounds, looked much younger than two. HCC’s team quickly suspected dental issues as a contributing factor.

It’s hard to put into words what those first appointments looked like. My husband John was working, so I went alone with all four children. They didn’t know how to sit in a waiting room, use silverware, or eat off a plate. It was chaotic, but the HCC staff met us with patience, flexibility, and grace. They coordinated multiple appointments at once—while one child received dental care, another saw a medical provider. They took the time to really understand each child’s needs.

What made the difference was that this care wasn’t just clinical—it was deeply personal. The HCC team didn’t just treat symptoms; they wrapped their arms around our entire family. We received referrals to Children’s Mercy, support with diagnoses, and even help beyond health care—car seats, clothing, and potty-training support. The providers knew us by name. We weren’t lost in the shuffle.

Receiving this level of care in our small, rural community was extraordinary. HCC delivered truly “hometown” health care—rooted in compassion, responsiveness, and a commitment to walk alongside us through every step of the journey.
